What is Unassigned Traffic?
Traffic where GA4 cannot determine the source or medium because the UTM parameters or referrer data do not match any known Default Channel Grouping.
Seeing a large spike in "Unassigned" traffic in your Acquisition reports is a major red flag indicating a tracking implementation error.
Common Causes:
- Custom UTMs that break the rules: If you invent your own
utm_mediumlikeutm_medium=partner_link, GA4 doesn't know what "partner_link" means. It won't categorize it as Affiliate, Referral, or Social. It will dump it into Unassigned. - Measurement Protocol Errors: If your server-side conversions fire an event via the API but fail to include the original session ID, the event floats in a void with no traffic source attached, registering as Unassigned.
To fix UTM-based Unassigned traffic, you must either standardize your tracking links or set up Custom Channel Groupings in the GA4 admin.
