What is Server-Side Tagging?
A method of moving tracking tags from the user's browser to a secure cloud server, improving page speed, data privacy, and bypassing ad blockers.
Traditional tracking (client-side) relies on the user's web browser loading dozens of third-party JavaScript snippets (Facebook, Google Ads, TikTok, etc.). This slows down the website and exposes data to ad blockers and privacy restrictions like Apple's ITP.
The Server-Side Shift
With Server-Side Google Tag Manager (sGTM), the user's browser only sends a single stream of data to a cloud server you control (often hosted on Google Cloud or AWS). Your server then transforms and distributes that data to the various marketing vendors.
Benefits:
- Faster Page Loads: You delete most of the heavy 3rd-party code from your site.
- First-Party Context: Ad blockers generally ignore requests sent to your own subdomain (e.g.,
data.yourcompany.com). - Data Control: You can modify or sanitize data (e.g., hash an email address) before sending it to Facebook or Google.
